UPI Payment Failed but Money Debited? Refund Time and Complaint Process

UPI Payment Failed but Money Debited

UPI refund guide

If a UPI payment failed but money was debited, check the status, save the transaction ID, wait for the applicable RBI reversal timeline, and escalate through official channels.

UPI transfer

T+1

Debit happened, beneficiary not credited

Merchant payment

T+5

Debit happened, merchant confirmation failed

Delayed reversal

₹100/day

Compensation beyond the applicable RBI timeline

You scan a QR code, enter your UPI PIN and tap the payment button.

The app shows “Payment failed,” but your bank account has already been debited.

Now you are left wondering: Where did the money go? Should you pay again? Will it return automatically? Whom should you contact?

The first thing to know is that a failed UPI payment does not usually mean your money has disappeared. In many cases, the amount is automatically returned after the banks and payment systems confirm that the transaction could not be completed.

However, the refund timeline depends on the type of payment:

  • For a transfer where your account was debited but the beneficiary was not credited, the reversal should generally be completed by T+1 calendar day.
  • For a merchant payment where your account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation, the reversal should generally be completed by T+5 calendar days.

Here, T means the calendar date on which you made the transaction.

This guide explains what to do immediately, how to track the transaction, when to expect the refund, how to complain and when you may be eligible for compensation.

Information last verified: 17 August 2026. UPI applications and complaint menus can change. Check your bank, UPI app, NPCI and RBI websites for the latest process.

UPI payment failed but money debited: Quick answer

Follow these steps:

  1. Check whether the transaction is failed, pending or successful.
  2. Check your bank balance or statement to confirm the debit.
  3. Save the UPI transaction ID, date, time, amount and receiver details.
  4. Do not immediately repeat a pending payment.
  5. Raise an issue from the transaction-history section of your UPI app.
  6. Allow the applicable RBI auto-reversal period.
  7. Contact your bank if the money is not returned within that period.
  8. Escalate an unresolved complaint through the official grievance channels.

UPI refund timeline under RBI rules

The Reserve Bank of India has prescribed maximum turnaround times for failed transactions using authorised payment systems.

Situation Auto-reversal timeline Compensation for delay
Account debited but beneficiary not credited during a UPI fund transfer T+1 calendar day ₹100 per day beyond T+1
Account debited but confirmation not received by a merchant T+5 calendar days ₹100 per day beyond T+5

“T” is the calendar date of the transaction.

For example, if you transfer money to a friend on Monday and your account is debited but your friend is not credited, the reversal should generally be completed by Tuesday.

If you pay a merchant on Monday but the merchant does not receive confirmation, the applicable outer limit may extend to Saturday.

These are maximum regulatory timelines. The money may return sooner. RBI also says banks and other payment-system participants should try to resolve failed transactions more quickly.

You can read the complete framework in RBI circular RBI/2019-20/67, DPSS.CO.PD No.629/02.01.014/2019-20.

What do failed, pending and successful UPI statuses mean?

Before making another payment or filing a complaint, check the exact transaction status.

Failed

A failed status means the payment could not be completed.

The reason may be a server problem, network interruption, incorrect UPI PIN, insufficient balance, transaction limit or another technical issue.

If money was deducted despite the failed status, it should normally be reversed automatically within the applicable timeline.

Pending

A pending status means the payment system has not yet received final confirmation.

The transaction may eventually become:

  • Successful, with the receiver getting the money; or
  • Failed, followed by a reversal to your account.

Do not immediately repeat a pending payment unless the transaction status has been confirmed. Otherwise, both payments could eventually succeed.

Successful

A successful status means the payment system has processed the transaction. However, the receiver may sometimes say that the money is not visible yet.

Ask the receiver to check:

  • Their bank statement, not only the UPI app notification
  • The correct bank account linked to the UPI ID
  • Whether the transaction appears under a different description
  • Whether their bank is experiencing a temporary delay

If the sender’s app shows success but the beneficiary is not credited, raise a complaint using the transaction details.

Why can a UPI payment fail after money is deducted?

A UPI payment passes through several connected systems. Your UPI app, bank, the receiver’s bank, NPCI and sometimes a merchant’s payment system may all be involved.

Think of it like sending a parcel through several delivery checkpoints.

The parcel may leave your home, but the final delivery confirmation may not reach the system because one checkpoint is unavailable. The parcel is not automatically lost, but its status must be checked and reconciled.

A similar situation can occur in a UPI payment. Your bank may debit the amount, but the final confirmation may fail before the receiver or merchant is credited.

Common causes include:

  • Sender’s bank server is temporarily unavailable
  • Receiver’s bank server is unavailable
  • Weak or interrupted internet connection
  • Payment request expires
  • UPI app stops responding during the transaction
  • Merchant system does not receive confirmation
  • Daily or per-transaction limit is reached
  • Incorrect UPI PIN is entered
  • Bank account has insufficient available balance
  • UPI ID or receiver details are incorrect
  • Technical timeout occurs between payment systems
  • The bank blocks the transaction for a security check

Do not assume every failed payment happened because of your internet connection. The interruption may have occurred at the bank, UPI app, receiver or merchant end.

What to do immediately after a failed UPI payment

Step 1: Check your bank account

Do not rely only on the notification shown by the UPI app.

Check:

  • Your current bank balance
  • The bank’s SMS alert
  • Your mini statement
  • Mobile banking
  • Internet banking
  • Your detailed bank statement

If you use SBI, you can follow the methods in our SBI balance-check guide.

Confirm whether the amount was actually debited or merely placed on hold.

Step 2: Open the transaction in your UPI app

Open your UPI application and find the payment under:

  • Transaction history
  • Activity
  • Payments
  • Recent transactions
  • Passbook

The menu name depends on the app.

Open the affected transaction and check whether it is marked as failed, pending or successful.

Step 3: Save the transaction details

Record the following:

  • UPI transaction ID or reference number
  • Date and time
  • Amount
  • Sender’s bank
  • Receiver’s name
  • Receiver’s UPI ID, if visible
  • Merchant name and order ID, if applicable
  • Current transaction status
  • Screenshot of the payment screen
  • Screenshot or statement showing the debit

The transaction ID helps the UPI app and banks trace the payment.

Do not post an unmasked screenshot publicly. It may contain financial or personal information.

Step 4: Do not pay again immediately

If the payment is pending, wait for its final status.

If you urgently need to complete the purchase, first ask the merchant whether the original payment was received. Check your app and bank statement again before making another payment.

When you must retry, use a different payment method and keep evidence of both attempts. This will make it easier to identify and claim a refund for any duplicate payment.

Step 5: Raise an issue in the UPI app

Most major UPI apps allow you to report a problem directly from the transaction page.

The general process is:

  1. Open the UPI app.
  2. Go to transaction history.
  3. Select the affected payment.
  4. Tap Help, Report an issue, Check status or a similar option.
  5. Choose the closest issue, such as:
  6. Money debited but payment failed
  7. Receiver not credited
  8. Merchant did not receive payment
  9. Transaction pending
  10. Refund not received
  11. Submit the complaint.
  12. Save the complaint or ticket number.

Menu names can change, so follow the instructions shown in your app.

How to complain through popular UPI apps

Google Pay

Open Google Pay, select the transaction from your activity and use the available help or issue-reporting option.

Google Pay may ask you to confirm whether:

  • The receiver was credited
  • The amount was debited
  • The transaction is still pending
  • You have already contacted your bank

Use only support options available inside the official app or on the official Google Pay website.

PhonePe

Open PhonePe, select the relevant transaction and use the Contact PhonePe Support, Help or Report an issue option shown for that transaction.

Select the issue describing a debit without successful payment and retain the ticket number.

Paytm

Open the payment from your transaction history and use the help or support option associated with it.

Choose the relevant payment-status or refund issue. Do not call a phone number taken from an unverified search result.

BHIM

Open the transaction and select Report Issue or the complaint option available for the payment. BHIM allows users to report declined and other disputed transactions from the application.

Bank UPI applications

If you used your bank’s UPI application, open its transaction-history or customer-service section and look for UPI complaints.

If no complaint option is available, contact your bank through the official phone number, branch, website or grievance portal.

When should you contact your bank?

You can contact your bank earlier to record the problem, especially if the amount is large or the transaction details are unclear.

You should certainly contact it if:

  • The amount is not returned within the applicable T+1 or T+5 timeline
  • The UPI app closes the complaint without resolving it
  • The payment shows successful but the receiver was not credited
  • The transaction is stuck as pending
  • You cannot raise an issue through the app
  • The bank statement shows a debit but the UPI app has no transaction record
  • You suspect an unauthorised or fraudulent transaction
  • You need to ask about delayed-refund compensation

Provide the bank with:

  • Your name and registered mobile number
  • Masked account details
  • UPI transaction ID
  • Date and time of the transaction
  • Amount
  • Receiver or merchant details
  • Screenshots
  • UPI app complaint number
  • A clear description of the issue

Ask for a bank complaint number and save it. A phone conversation without a reference number may be difficult to prove later.

How to raise a complaint through NPCI

NPCI provides UPI complaint and transaction-status support through UPI Help.

The portal may ask for transaction or account-related details to identify the payment. Use the official NPCI address and follow the instructions shown on the page.

NPCI’s complaint mechanism can be useful when:

  • You cannot resolve the issue through the UPI app
  • You need to check a transaction’s status
  • The app and bank provide conflicting information
  • You need an additional dispute record

Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, debit-card PIN or internet-banking password while filing a complaint.

Can you receive ₹100 per day for a delayed UPI refund?

Under the RBI framework, compensation of ₹100 per day of delay applies when the reversal is not completed within the prescribed timeline:

  1. Beyond T+1 for a UPI fund transfer where the beneficiary was not credited
  2. Beyond T+5 for a merchant payment where the merchant did not receive confirmation

RBI states that applicable compensation should be credited suo motu. This means it should be paid automatically without requiring the customer to submit a separate claim.

In practice, if the refund arrives late but compensation does not, write to your bank and mention:

  • RBI circular number
  • Original transaction date
  • Applicable turnaround time
  • Refund date
  • Number of delayed days
  • Transaction and complaint reference numbers

Do not confuse compensation with the refund itself. The refund is the return of your original money. Compensation is the additional amount prescribed for a delay beyond the regulatory deadline.

How to escalate an unresolved UPI complaint

Use the escalation process in stages.

Level 1: UPI app

Raise the complaint from the affected transaction and save the ticket number.

Level 2: Your bank

Contact the bank whose account was debited. Use its official grievance channel and provide the full transaction details.

Level 3: Bank’s grievance or nodal officer

If normal customer support does not resolve the complaint, escalate it using the grievance-officer or nodal-officer details published on the bank’s website.

Keep copies of emails, complaint numbers, screenshots and responses.

Level 4: RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme

You can generally approach the RBI Ombudsman if the bank does not reply within 30 days after receiving your complaint, rejects it wholly or partly, or provides a response you are not satisfied with, subject to the scheme’s conditions.

File the complaint through the official RBI Complaint Management System.

Include:

  • Bank complaint number
  • Date you first complained to the bank
  • Transaction details
  • Screenshots and statement
  • Bank’s reply, if any
  • UPI app complaint record
  • Refund and compensation details
  • A clear explanation of the resolution you want

The RBI Ombudsman is an escalation route. It should not replace the initial complaint to your bank.

What if a merchant asks you to pay again?

First, ask the merchant to check the payment in their bank account or merchant dashboard.

Do not rely only on:

  • Your debit SMS
  • A payment screenshot
  • A soundbox announcement
  • A notification displayed on one phone

If the original transaction is pending, it may later become successful. Paying again too quickly could result in a duplicate payment.

If you must make another payment:

  1. Ask the merchant to record that the first payment is disputed.
  2. Save the original order or invoice.
  3. Use a clearly traceable payment method.
  4. Keep the receipt for the second payment.
  5. Check whether the first payment is later completed or reversed.

If both payments succeed, contact the merchant first for a refund of the duplicate payment. A successful duplicate transaction is different from a failed transaction and may not follow the same auto-reversal process.

What if a UPI payment for an EMI or bill fails?

A debit from your account does not always mean the EMI, bill or recharge was successfully paid.

Check the status with both sides:

  • Your bank or UPI app
  • The lender, biller, telecom provider or merchant

If the bill or EMI remains unpaid:

  • Inform the recipient immediately
  • Share the transaction reference where appropriate
  • Ask whether another payment is required
  • Request written confirmation
  • Keep evidence of the failed transaction
  • Avoid waiting until after the due date to report it

A failed payment does not automatically cancel the underlying bill or repayment obligation.

If an EMI is due, check the lender’s records and repayment instructions. Late fees, bounce charges or repayment-reporting consequences will depend on the agreement, payment status and lender’s policy.

Before taking any loan, review the repayment date, charges and grievance details in the Key Facts Statement.

Failed transaction or UPI fraud: Know the difference

A failed transaction happens when a payment you authorised cannot be completed properly.

Fraud or an unauthorised transaction is different. It may involve:

  • A payment you did not make
  • Sharing a UPI PIN or OTP with a fraudster
  • Approving an unknown collect request
  • Installing a screen-sharing application
  • Scanning a QR code after being told it will generate a refund
  • Calling a fake customer-care number
  • Entering bank details on a fake website

If you suspect fraud:

  1. Contact your bank immediately.
  2. Block the relevant payment facility if necessary.
  3. Report the incident through the official cybercrime helpline 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
  4. Preserve messages, phone numbers, screenshots and transaction details.
  5. Do not continue communicating with the suspected fraudster.

Do not wait for the normal failed-transaction timeline when the transaction was unauthorised.

UPI refund safety tips

  • Never share your UPI PIN with anyone.
  • A refund does not require you to enter a UPI PIN to receive money.
  • You do not need to scan a QR code to receive a refund.
  • Never install screen-sharing apps for customer support.
  • Use support options inside the official UPI app.
  • Verify bank contact details on the bank’s official website.
  • Do not call numbers found in social-media comments.
  • Never share an OTP over a phone call.
  • Do not publicly post screenshots containing full transaction details.
  • Do not make a small “test payment” requested by an unknown support agent.
  • Do not approve an unfamiliar collect request.
  • Check your bank statement instead of relying only on an SMS or screenshot.

UPI failed-payment checklist

Use this checklist to keep your complaint organised:

  • I checked whether the transaction is failed, pending or successful
  • I confirmed the debit in my bank account
  • I saved the UPI transaction ID
  • I saved the date, time and amount
  • I took a safe, masked screenshot
  • I checked whether the receiver or merchant was credited
  • I avoided making an immediate duplicate payment
  • I raised an issue through the UPI app
  • I saved the complaint number
  • I checked the applicable T+1 or T+5 timeline
  • I contacted my bank if the refund was delayed
  • I asked about ₹100-per-day compensation where applicable
  • I kept evidence for further escalation

Frequently asked questions

How long does a failed UPI refund take?

The applicable outer limit depends on the transaction. If your account was debited but the beneficiary was not credited during a fund transfer, the reversal should generally be completed by T+1 calendar day. For a merchant payment without confirmation, the timeline is generally T+5 calendar days.

What does T+1 mean in a UPI refund?

T is the calendar date of the transaction. T+1 means the next calendar day. It does not mean that you must count only bank working days under this RBI framework.

What does T+5 mean?

T+5 means five calendar days after the date of the transaction. It applies to the specified situation where your account was debited but transaction confirmation was not received at the merchant location.

Will the money return automatically?

In a qualifying failed transaction, the reversal should generally happen automatically. You should still save the transaction details and raise an issue if the status remains unclear or the refund is delayed.

Should I make the UPI payment again?

Do not immediately repeat a pending transaction. First check the bank account, app status and receiver’s account. If you must retry, keep proof of both payments in case both are ultimately successful.

Where can I find the UPI transaction ID?

Open the payment in your UPI app’s transaction history. The reference may appear as a UPI transaction ID, UTR, bank reference number or transaction reference.

What if the receiver says the money was not received?

Check whether your transaction is pending, failed or successful. Ask the receiver to check the bank statement for the correct linked account. Raise a complaint if your app shows success but the beneficiary remains uncredited.

Can I complain directly to NPCI?

You can use NPCI’s UPI complaint mechanism to check or report a transaction. However, you should also raise the issue through your UPI app and the bank whose account was debited.

When does ₹100-per-day compensation apply?

It applies when a qualifying failed transaction is not reversed within the RBI-prescribed T+1 or T+5 timeline. The compensation is ₹100 for each day of delay beyond the applicable limit.

Is the compensation automatic?

RBI states that applicable financial compensation should be credited automatically, without waiting for a separate complaint or claim. If you do not receive it, raise the issue with your bank.

Can I approach the RBI Ombudsman immediately?

You should first complain to the bank. You can generally approach the RBI Ombudsman if the bank does not respond within 30 days, rejects the complaint or gives an unsatisfactory response, subject to the applicable scheme conditions.

Can checking a failed UPI payment affect my credit score?

No. Checking or disputing a UPI transaction does not itself affect your credit score. However, if the failed payment was meant for an EMI and the EMI remains unpaid, the consequences will depend on the repayment status and lender’s policy.

Final takeaway

If a UPI payment fails but money is deducted, do not panic and do not immediately pay again.

Check the transaction status and your bank account. Save the UPI transaction ID, raise an issue through your app and monitor the applicable refund deadline.

Under the RBI framework:

  1. A failed UPI fund transfer should generally be reversed by T+1 calendar day when the beneficiary is not credited.
  2. A failed merchant payment should generally be reversed by T+5 calendar days when the merchant does not receive confirmation.
  3. A delay beyond the applicable timeline attracts ₹100 per day in compensation.

If the money is not returned, complain to your bank and save the reference number. Escalate the matter through the bank’s grievance process and, when eligible, the RBI Complaint Management System.

Most importantly, use only official support channels. Never share a UPI PIN or OTP, install a screen-sharing application, scan a QR code or make another payment to obtain a refund.
